What is HLA genetic compatibility?

Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) genes encode cell-surface proteins that present pathogen peptides to the immune system. Greater HLA diversity between partners maximises offspring immune coverage. Research shows humans detect HLA dissimilarity through scent — encoded in volatile peptide ligands from the main olfactory epithelium.
